In recent days we’ve lost 2 local boutiques & an incredible wine bar who created an incredible & authentic experience.

To be completely frank, It’s terrifying.

Not only are we a small boutique, but every dollar funds our outreach work. Our goal isn’t to make a nice living, it’s to save a life.

•It pays the rent to create a safe space for women who are seeking safety from abuse.

•It covers family dinners that demonstrates to survivors that there are people who have walked the same roads & are walking alongside them.

•It pays the fee to file for divorce from a physically unsafe environment - or stands in the gap for the moving company to leave in a hurry.

So as a busy mama, I hope you know I get it. As an entrepreneur who built a business purely to fund keeping women safe, I pray you’ll shop differently.

Do you know what the feud between Blake Lively & Justin Baldoni is actually about (in my opinion)? (<—-so I don’t myself get sued too, i suppose)

Money•Power•Status•and Future Success.

Do you know what we could instead be focusing on?

An actual conversation about 🅓🅞🅜🅔🅢🅣🅘🅒 🅥🅘🅞🅛🅔🅝🅒🅔.

But instead, as a society we are choosing:
•To try and find the good guy and the bad guy
•To pin “#metoo” against all other possibilities
•To crave and obsess over every single detail of the inner workings of a relationship between 2 successful people with a boundless access to litigators, security guards, (and publicists)
•To let tik tok “newscasters” comb through court filings & give us their non professional opinions.
•To pick sides, to determine the hero’s and villains (in humans who think 0% about us.)

It Ends with Us is based loosely on Colleen Hoovers childhood with an abusive father and the never ending question her mother faced of if she made the right choice.

Her mother cried through the entire screening & was reassured she made the right choice for Colleen & her sister in leaving.

But what we’re focused on?
•Who wore florals, who hired a crisis team, and who really “cared” about domestic violence the most. (<—-that is actually a thing)

We took an international opportunity to have a conversation about: how sometimes abusers are likeable, charming, successful, and those who are abused are beautiful, confident, and kind•••

and we decided that it made us all a little too “uncomfy” to face and dove head first into the stuff that doesn’t matter at all.

It can’t end with us friends, unless we stop intentionally distracting ourselves about the real topic at hand.

Don’t consume Domestic Violence as if it’s something for your happy hour discussion or a topic to distract you from your own life.

Challenge the conversation. Ask the hard questions, and lean into your own bias & comfort level if someone you loved may be experiencing it.

That’s when it ends with us.

Mandy Haug, FNP-C, Medical Director & Co-Owner at The Vanity Bar, Mandy embodies every ounce of the #SheBelongs framework and has held such an important space for us since 🅓🅐🅨 🅞🅝🅔!

Over a quick 15 minute appointment, I briefly whispered to Mandy what I was up to since leaving the corporate world. In that moment we realized a shared life experience, we were both 🅢🅤🅡🅥🅘🅥🅞🅡🅢 of the unimaginable.

Mandy has a heart for our SWS community & a passion for creating safe spaces & expanding education and building awareness against Domestic Violence.

•SWS Brochures have been front & center in the Vanity Bar waiting area, because what if a woman waiting for their appointment might not realize there is an army of survivors ready to help her reach safety?

•She coordinated multiple fundraisers on behalf of SWS, helping us to continue to provide essential services.

•She’s donated facials to support clients who were navigating the unimaginable. Helping them feel seen, loved, and provided a brief break from the cruel reality they were navigating.

•Along with the Vanity Bar team, she created the most magical self-care kits. We were able to gift to our Mama’s, reminding them that they were seen (too!) this Christmas.
•••(I seriously wish I could describe the ooh’s and ahh’s while they opened them up together!)

I could go on for pages to describe what Mandy has done for our survivors & families or even myself personally through her encouragement.

Her generosity and passion to help is evident in all that she does and comes from a place of honor & true authenticity. We know that she’s a Styled with Strength sister that’s going to be with us forever & we couldn’t be more grateful.

goodness, goodness, where does one begin?

When developing the #shebelongs framework, little did we know the impact it would have on our ability to provide care for women & families in Fargo-Moorhead.

Nikki Terras at Modern Hair Studio embodies this heart for others by the boat-load and brings it to life every week.

Since launching Styled with Strength Nikki has:

•Donated high-end beauty supplies to our beauty drive. (See those cutie pies?!)
•Purchased regularly from Shop SWS (someone told me her holiday give-away was magic ✨)
•Hosted 2 full days of back-to-school hair cuts for SWS kiddos, making them feel seen, loved, and confident to start the next year! (So.many.haircuts!)

but most of all? •••

•Nikki dedicates one hour (every.single.week!) to meet the SWS team at the salon & provides a hair wash & blow out to a little lady that has grown to become family to both Nikki’s and ours ♥️

We make loving others complicated don’t we?

We are SO grateful to Nikki for being with us on this wild ride from day one and for stepping in and loving our littles (and grownup’s!) with authenticity, joy, and sunshine ☀️ everyday!

My TikTok feed has been filled with Zach Bryan and Brianna ChickenFry break up news the past few weeks•••

Despite minimal investment or passion regarding either individual previously;

there’s been a reoccurring statement that I keep coming back to when it comes to someone standing in their truth and disclosing someone’s abusive actions.

The truth is 🅘🅝🅒🅞🅝🅥🅔🅝🅘🅔🅝🅣.

•An inconvenient truth makes you say: “There’s two sides to every story.”
•An inconvenient truth makes you say: “It’s weird that she’s talking about it on a podcast.”
•An inconvenient truth makes you say: “I think he’s a puke, but I just like his music.”
•An inconvenient truth makes you say: “I mean I guess their relationship is none of my business anyways.”
•An inconvenient truth makes you try to find a reason for the harmful behavior towards a loved one. Whether it be previous military service, the loss of a loved one, or a trauma that went unrecognized.

But in the end:
•An individual turned down 12 million dollars to be able to speak her truth regarding a relationship
•An individual has a history of prior abuse and non disclosure agreements with previous partners (who were not able to decline a “generous” offer)

and while the truth may be inconvenient because his love songs are so sad and so damn catchy for our Instagram stories

The truth remains••• 🅣🅗🅔 🅣🅡🅤🅣🅗.

I hope that what we “do” never makes sense.

I hope that seeking help feels a lot more like meeting a girlfriend for a happy hour than filling out your name on an intake form.

I hope that when you think of domestic violence; you think of your sister, your next door neighbor, or your college room-mate, or hell; the girl you think is the coolest on tik tok.

We are shaking things up Fargo, and we hope that you’re ready for a new perspective.

The most dangerous threat to women within Fargo/Moorhead, is truly abusers of influence: those of power, and of a “perceived positive reputation” within our community.

What makes us different as an organization; is that we recognize that the most deceptive and skilled abusers, often target those that appear the most confident, the hardest to “catch” per se.

Which is where we’ll be: at the fun events, at the fanciest networking parties, and right at the “shop” in West Fargo.

You deserve to feel safe.

No matter how “kind” the outside world thinks they may be, no matter the financial control they may have, no matter the portrait of “crazy ex girlfriend” they’ve attempted to paint you as.

We see them.
But most importantly, we see you.
And we hope you know how amazing you are.

Domestic Violence is happening in every neighborhood within Fargo/Moorhead, and knows no income restriction, is likely happening to a woman at the height of her career, and to the person that always seems the happiest, or is at the hands of the guy “that seems so nice.”

Be the friend that listens, that holds sacred space when someone discloses something that sounds like a dysfunctional relationship or a “toxic” pairing at best, as it 💯 is likely far more.

Be the person that pauses, when the topic of the trial that comes up at the breakroom and choose to create a safe space for your sister who might be fearful she could be experiencing something similar.

You can help us change future endings.
You can help to be the friend that honors.
You can be the boss that asks more questions.

Sonja should have been safe here, and we are hopeful that you’ll join us in this mission to ensure anyone that may be experiencing similar, knows there’s a safe place to go.
